A nuclear reactor fuel element with an extended fuel element casing (2) has a retaining body (12) which, in an engagement position attainable by rotation about the longitudinal axis (6) of the casing, engages in a groove (16) in a cross-section inside the extended fuel element casing (2) and is prevented from rotating in this engagement position by a latching component (18) which is a) an engagement component movable along the fuel element casing (2) and guided on the retaining body (12), cooperating with its associated engagement drilling (20) in the wall of the fuel element casing (2), or b) an engagement component movable along the fuel element casing (2) and guided on the retaining body (12), cooperating with its associated engagement slot (22) at one end of the fuel element casing (2) or with its associated engagement groove (21) on the inside of the fuel element casing (2).
