Light cracked diene-containing hydrocarbon oils, having a final boiling point of not more than 375 DEG C., are contacted with hydrogen in the presence of a nickel catalyst supported on a carrier containing at least one alkaline earth metal sulphate which is soluble or substantially insoluble in water, the average catalyst temperature being not greater than 160 DEG C., thereby hydrogenating the dienes, and other highly reactive unsaturated compounds present. The carrier is preferably barium sulphate, and the catalyst preferably contains 1-25% by weight of nickel. The oil may be obtained by thermally cracking a gasoline, for example one having a final boiling point of not more than 230 DEG C., in the presence of steam. Preferably the oil has a sulphur content of less than 0,1% by weight. The catalyst may be employed in the fluidized or suspended state, but is preferably in the form of a fixed bed employed in the trickle technique, for example as described in Specification 657,521. The pressure is preferably between 10 and 60 atmospheres absolute. |
