The present invention relates to an equipment and a method of cooling metal strips in a roll quenching equipment of a heat treating line, and is basically characterized by providing gas jet cooling equipment where two or more nozzle headers are disposed in the direction of the roll axis said cooling rolls via the metal strip, the nozzle headers being narrower than the metal strip, and the nozzle headers are movable along the moving direction of the cooling rolls, and at least one of the nozzle headers is movable along the roll axis; and gas adjusting apparatus which adjusts pressure or flow rate of a cooling gas flowed into each nozzle header. In dependence upon such a structure, the nozzle headers of narrow width are moved immediately above hot points shaped in W and small in width of non-uniform distribution of temperature, and the cooling gas is impinged to the hot points, said cooling gas having been adjusted in the pressure or flow rate by means of the gas adjusting equipment, thereby to carry out the concentrical coolings thereon, so that the non-uniform temperature distribution are effectively cancelled.
