The telephone system (10) provides each telephone subscriber (14, 16) connected to the exchange (12) with a display device (22) allowing the user to be notified if a message is waiting. The display device is associated with a standard television receiver (24, 26) coupled to a coaxial cable (32, 36) for supplying television and video signals and message information signals, which can be displayed on the screen instead of the usual television or video signals. Pref. the television receiver has a data interface receiving an associated logic address from the telephone network allowing video text data to be displayed on the screen.
