A propeller for a marine vessel comprises a rotor 1, Fig. 1, which includes a hollow cylinder 2 supported by ball bearings 9, 10 and having a pair of helical blades 4, 5, Fig. 3, internally thereof, the pitch of said blades being non- uniform (as shown) and the rotor being driven through gears 16, 17 to effect axial flow of the water of flotation from an inlet passage 13 to an outlet passage 14 containing flow-straightening vanes or blades 15 so that two propulsive thrusts P, P<SP>1</SP> are effected by the rotor and the blades 15, respectively. The blades 4, 5 are tangentially connected to each other and effect both centrifugal and centripetal actions 7, 8. The trailing ends of the rotor blades and the leading ends of the flow-straightening blades may be modified with regard to their shapes, Figs. 6 to 8 (not shown); and the rotor may be furnished with a shaft either end thereof, each shaft being supported by a respective bearing (34 or 35). The shaft at the leading end of the rotor may be coupled to a driving shaft. Alternatively, the rotor driven through bevel gears (28), Fig. 5 (not shown), which are adjacent the flow-straightening blades. The embodiment shown in Fig. 9 is intended to effect propulsion of a land vehicle or aircraft, the rotor 45 being such that it produces both axial and radial flow of air towards flowstraightening blades 49. Additional blades (50), Fig. 11 (not shown), are lodged between the rotor blades 46 at the trailing end of the rotor. The propeller according to this embodiment may be used to effect propulsion of a marine vessel. |
