The lift is driven by a motor (2) via an epicyclic gear train (3), whose annulus (4) forms the driven member and has a rope pulley (6) mounted on it. The annulus forms the braked component, typically having a brake disc. Brake callipers can be evenly spaced round the disc on a fixed structure, having shoes acting against the disc on both sides. Alternatively, the annulus can have a brake drum formed at one end, and against whose inner surface brake shoes act, or there can be a band brake acting against the outside surface. USE/ADVANTAGE - The load can be braked even if the transmission driving the lift fractures.
