A coil mounted in one of two relatively movable components is supplied with an alternating electrical current. A second coil is fixed to the first component. One coil acts as a stimulation coil supplied with the a.c. current and the other as a measurement coil. An electrical signal corresp. to the relative displacement (l) of the two components is generated as a result of the variable electromagnetic coupling between the two coils (22,24). The measurement coil is connected to a magnetisable core which corresp. to the other component and which can move axially within the stimulation coil. USE/ADVANTAGE - Esp. for controlling motion of shock absorber in vehicle. Enables accurate measurement of relative displacement of two components.
