The expanding mandrel has a spreader section (2) with a tapering end (5) for insertion into the pipe to be expanded. Its surface is pitched at 5-20 deg. against the surface (6) of the spreader (2). The tapering end (5) has a rounded transit to the cylindrical section of the spreader (2). The working end of the mandrel unit has a holder (7) extending on both sides of a divided mandrel (1), which has a wedge surface (9). Where the mandrel unit (1) is to be applied to pipes of various dias., the holding section (3) is held (7) in a housing with adjustment, for a conical setting unit to be inserted against the wedge surface (9) axially, to give the required adjustment. USE/ADVANTAGE - The mandrel is used for expanding pipe ends, with a cylindrical spreader section, especially for plastics pipes of crosslinked polyolefins which can be spread when hot or cold, for coupling. The mandrel gives an effective pipe spreading action, without damage to the pipe material.
