Liquid crystal display cell, e.g. for twisted nematic LCD - with different structure of liquid crystal material in intermediate area between controlled display segments

The display cell, with individually controlled display zones, has a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between a pair of electrode plates with the liquid crystal material in the intermediate areas (A) between the electrically-controlled segments (82..115) having a non-twisted structure. The liquid crystal material within the electrically-controlled segments is brought into the non-twisted state by application of control signals to the corresponding segment electrodes. Pref. the liquid crystal layer in the intermediate areas has a parallel or anti-parallel structure. ADVANTAGE - Prevents brightness interference from intermediate areas between display segments.
