A temperature-resistant yarn or plied yarn consists of staple fibres made 60-95 weight % of drawn mineral fibres with a mineral fibre dia of over 3 micrometres, pref. at least 6 micrometres. The reamining 5-40% of the staple fibres consist of organic process fibre. A glass filament or wire reinforcement may be incorporated and standard crimping and twisting processes are used in the prodn. of the yarn. Pref. the mineral fibre is a glass fibre with an increased SiO2 content. Up to 50 weight % of the glass fibre is replaced by normal mineral fibres. 80-90 weight % of the staple fibre contents consist of mineral fibres with a 6-14 micrometre fibre dia., 50-150mm in particular. The process fibre (10-20 weight %) has a fibre dia of 6-18 micrometres. ADVANTAGE - The prodn. is used as an insulation material in fabrics, ropes and braided products. It has a sufficient temp. resistance but eliminates the health hazard associated with ceramic fibres.
