The press section has at least one belt impermeable to water and air to take up the web or to carry it. A unit separates at least one edge zone of the material from the web, such as an edge spray tube or blade, to be removed by at least one system. The edge removal system pref. twists the running plane of the edge strip round two axes, for the edge to travel away to one side, using a scraper and a narrow counter roller, located at a deflection roller which carries the full web width. Pref. the edge strip can also be detached by a narrow pick-up roller with a smooth surface, smoother than the belt surface. A scraper can pref. detach the strip taken by the pick-up roller. The pick-up roller can be conical, and on an axis angled against the belt plane to increase the roller contact surface area. The adjustment for the edge removal with the edge cutter is pref. coupled to a control circuit to maintain a constant required edge strip width. The cutter is linked mechanically to the edge removal. The belt surface is pref. rougher at the edge, to assist removal of the cut web edge strips. A smooth roller can be used instead of a belt, with a suction zone to take off the cut edges of the web. An additional blower can direct the cut edge strips to the pick-up rollers. USE/ADVANTAGE - The appts. detaches the edge zone material from the web, and removes it, to define the web width, to take it from the belt independently of the paper.
