Catalysts for the polymerization of olefins comprising the product of the reaction between: (A) a metallocene compound of titanium, zirconium or hafnium containing two substituted cyclopentadienyl rings joined by a bridging group, and (B) the product of the reaction between water and an alkyl aluminium wherein at least one alkyl contains at least three carbon atoms; the molar ratio alkyl aluminium water is higher than 2:1.
