The circuit and method for automatically controlling the gain of a received signal includes an amplifier for variably amplifying the gain of data, a level measuring circuit for detecting the peak level of a received signal, a gain controlling circuit for comparing the peak level output from the level measuring circuit with a predetermined threshold value, outputting a gating control signal, and providing a gain controlling signal to the amplifier, a level shifter for waveform-shaping the output of the amplifier, and an output buffer for transmitting the data output from the level shifter to a decoding circuit in response to the gating control signal output from the gain controlling circuit, thereby enhancing the stability and reliability of signal discrimination.
