Broadband digital color television signals to meet the standards (proposed) for future HDTV systems require data reduction for magnetic tape recording. This should also provide for intermittant cutting, fast search runs, slow motion and freeze frame with optimal picture quality. In a modular system with as many like components as possible and with the information content of the individual frames distributed on a macroblock basis, a coding of high-level precision and efficiency is carried out by orthogonal transformation and separation of the data into FLC (fixed length coding) and VLC (variable length coding), thus enabling optimal utilization of the data capacity available for each recording channel through feed-forward control based on feedback per frame pulse.
