Recycling of polymeric materials useful for the sepn. of plastic and non-plastic materials

Polymeric material (I) opt. following removal of other materials, is brought into contact with processing aids (II) at temps. at which (I) is either a low viscosity melt or is decomposed into low molecular wt. components so that the halogens contained within (I) reacts with (II) to form halides that are sepd. from the mixt.. Pref. (I) and (II) are brought into contact in a melt contg. (II) or consisting of (II). The melt is a metal, metal oxide or glass melt. (II) is added to either a polymer melt, a powder of previously decomposed polymer or a soln. thereof. (II) is worked into a polymer melt from which the majority of halogen has been removed by heat. The halide by-prod. is sepd. from the mixt. by physical means, pref. filtration or gravity sepn. or by distn. of the liq. polymer or resulting oil. Halogenide by-prods. that are volatile at or around the m.pt. of (I) are sepd. from the mixt. in the gaseous state. Articles composed of thermoplastic and other materials are brought into contact with a liq. material at less than 400 deg.C in a bath where the articles are resolved into liq. polymers and other non-liq. materials that are sepd. from each other by mechanical means. The work-up of the resulting dehalogenated prod. is undertaken in a further treatment.
