In a method of preparing an ether having the formula [R-O]n-R', wherein R is a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group, R' is a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group and n is 1, 2, 3 or 4 comprising the reaction of an iodoaromatic compound with an alkyl compound containing at least one hydroxy substituent in the presence of a basic compound, a copper catalyst, and a reducing agent, such as hydrogen gas or a ferrous metal salt. The reducing agent minimizes undesirable by-products.
