In a primitive style hand-held drum consisting of a rigid wooden frame over which an animal rawhide is stretched and laced to produce a taut membrane which produces a drumming sound when struck with a drumstick. The tone produced by a primitive drum is affected by the original tautness of the rawhide, but more importantly by subsequent temperature and humidity changes which cause the rawhide to expand or contract and change the tone of the drum. In this invention, the outward appearance of a drum is similar to a primitive style drum. The drum is held by the lacing on the back of the drum with one hand and struck with a drumstick with the other hand. In this invention, the frame of the drum is split at one location and the frame may be expanded or contracted by mechanical means to increase or decrease the circumference and so the tautness of the rawhide and the desired tone of the drum. A further novelty of this invention is that by mechanical means an extended lever is activated by the fingers of the hand holding the drum so that the tone of the drum may be changed as the drum is being played.
