<p>PURPOSE:Polyester fiber is flame retarded by treatment with a specific halogen- containing compound and a surface layer of polyester copolymer is provided on the surface of the treated polyester fiber, whereby excellent fire retardancy is imparted to the polyester without any adverse effect on the inherent properties of fiber, especially light resistance. CONSTITUTION:Thermally melting synthetic fiber, preferably polyethylene terephthalate fiber, is treated with 7-12C cycloalkane bearing 3-6 halogen atoms such as 1,2,3,4,5,6-hexabromocycloheptane, or phenyl glycidyl ether derivative bearing 3-6 halogen atoms on the benzene rings such as a compound given as the formula. Then, the surface of fiber holding the flame retarder is coated with a polyester copolymer obtained from water-soluble polyalkylene glycol, terephthalic acid and/or isophthalic acid and alkylene glycol.</p> |
