The communication apparatus (1) is connected to a telecommunication line (12) and detects if a telephone (11) connected in parallel takes the line. In this case, the apparatus (1) detects if a facsimile call signal is present on the line (12) or if the line is silent during a certain time, thereby indicating if an image signal is to be transmitted/received on the line (12). The apparatus (1) is thus able to receive/transmit an image signal on the line (12), even if the telephone (11) which is connected in parallel with the apparatus (11) is in use.
