New ether-hydrocarbon compsns. for contg. colourant ions - enabling prodn. of coloured flames without interference from yellow colouration produced by unburnt carbon

The use of liquefiable gaseous ether or pressurise of the type methyl or dimethyl (butyl, propyl, ethyl)-ether which function as a solvent (in the liq. state for salts or other organo-metallic elements to give a liq. or gas burning with a coloured frame - the colour depending on the organo-metallic(s) chosen. A method for estimating the content of elements by flame analysis is also claimed. USE/ADVANTAGE - The ether is used as a co-solvent with a gaseous hydrocarbon e.g. butane-propane-isobutane etc. to give one stable gas for introduction into a commercial gas briquette or other form of firelighter. The use of a gaseous co-solvent similar in properties to the hydrocarbon, entrains the colouring action and the yellow colouration (due to incomplete combustion of Co and CO2) is suppressed.
