The appts. comprises a long tube or covered channel (101) buried in the surface of the roadway, laid lengthwise along parking places. The tube (101) holds a sensor (104) which travels along the tube transmitting information about the occupancy of each parking space. The sensor comprises a mobile piston-type element, which is slidable in the tube by a control device possibly of pneumatic type. The information is used to update display panels (108, 110) allowing vacant parking spaces to be identified. USE/ADVANTAGE - Automatic, vandal proof monitoring of parking spaces, without requirement for parking attendants.
