A furnace for maintaining a metal charge in a molten stage, comprises a hearth (5, 5a, 5b, 5c) for storing the metal charge; and an electric heating system (31) to melt and maintain the charge in the molten state. A complementary heating system, (35) is also provided, comprising at least one burner (35a, 35b) placed above the bath so that the combustion products form a non oxidising atmosphere above the charge. The process used for the melting and maintaining in the molten state of a metal charge in this furnace is also claimed and defines the use of the main electric heating system and the complementary burner system that may comprise a main burner (35a) and a pilot burner (35b) for igniting the main burner (35a). USE/ADVANTAGE - The furnace is used for melting a metal charge and maintaining the charge in a molten state, in partic. it is applicable for light metals such as aluminium. The major advantage of the furnace is that it reduces the risk of oxidising the metal charge during its sojourn in the furnace whilst conserving overall energy requirements. The use of a dual heating system also allows the melting operation to be boosted whilst reducing the operating costs of the furnace.
