Process for producing new trimethine cyanine dyes with general formula 1, where R<1> and R<3> denote atoms of hydrogen or nitro groups and can be identical or different, whereas R<2> denotes atom of chlorine or hydroxyl group, containing cation with general formula 4, with the meaning of symbols as above, obtained by condensation of aldehyde with general formula 2, with the meaning of symbols described above, in ice-cold acetic acid with derivative of 1-/2-hydroxyethyl/-3,3-dimethyl-3H-indole, characterised in that 1-/2-hydroxyethyl or 5-nitro-1/2-hydroxyethyl-2,3,3-trimethylindole bromide is used as derivative of 1-/2-hydroxyetylene/-3,3-dimethyl-3H-indole to produce a cation with general formula 4 and a dye with formula 1.<IMAGE>
