An inner end of the gear lever (6) is linked to the device (4,5) which transmits the gear lever's movement to the gearbox. This end of the lever carries a magnet (7). A plate (8) is located underneath the end of the lever. The plate carries a number of switches (11,12,13,14) which are sensitive to the magnetic field generated by the magnet. They are positioned under the positions that the end of the lever attains when the various gears are selected. The switches are connected in parallel to a visual or sonic alarm device. The switches are of flexible blade type. ADVANTAGE - Enables unacceptable gear selections to be detected to activate alarm and/or to prevent unacceptable gear selections.
