The oxidn. of an aromatic cpd. substd. with an oxidisable alkyl gp. of formula (I) (where Y = an oxidisable gp.; n = 1-5, pref. 1,2 or 3; r = 1-24C hydrocarbon which may be satd. aliphatic, satd. cyclo-aliphatic (opt. unsatd. or aromatic) mono- or poly-cyclic, or satd. aliphatic with a cyclic substitutent; 2R gps. on 2 O atoms on vicinal C atoms (on the aromatic nucleus) may form a satd. ring (opt. unsatd. or aromatic) with 5-8 atoms) is effected in water or a mixt. of water + organic solvent in the presence of a solid catalyst consituted of an active phase deposited on a support, comprising Pd and Sn, Ge, Te or Cu.
