A bead core 10 for a pneumatic tyre comprises loops of wire 13 embedded in rubber and forming an endless ring round the crosssection of which, for the complete circumferential extent thereof, is helically wrapped in spaced turns a cord made of heat-shrinkable synthetic polymeric material 19, such as nylon, so that during vulcanization of the tyre in a mould, the material 19 will shrink longitudinally to bind the wire loops firmly together and hold them in the compact bundle, while permitting the wire loops to shift axially relative to each other, as shown in Fig. 1, the rubber surrounding the wire flowing into any void areas in the apex of the tyre bead areas. The wire loops may be formed from a single continuous wire or, as shown in Fig. 3, from several parallel wires 13-16 embedded in rubber to form a tape 12. The ends 17, 18 of the tape overlap, the material 19 being wound twice around the overlapping ends, and the helical turns thereof being spaced apart a circumferential distance greater than the width of the material 19. |
