PURPOSE:To improve wear resistanc and deposition resistance of a cutting tool by a method wherein the surface of a cutting tool is covered with one of solid solutions of titanium carbide or nitride and hafnium carbide or nitride, and the cover layer is subjected to oxidation. CONSTITUTION:A cover layer consisting of one of solid solutions of titanium carbide or nitride and hafnium carbide or nitride is formed on the surface of a blank material made of hard metal or cermet. In addition, an oxide layer of te solid solution is formed on the cover layer, to form a cutting tool with double cover layer. The solide solutions of titanium carbide or nitride and hafnium carbide or nitride are (Ti, Hf)C, (Ti, Hf)N, and (Ti, Hf)C.N. The oxides of the solid solutions are titanium-hafnium oxycarbide (Ti, Hf)C.O and titanium-hafnium oxycarbonitride (Ti, Hf)C.N.O. |
