1,128,216. Alcohols. UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO. 13 Dec., 1965 [21 Dec., 1964], No. 52775/65. Heading C2C. Alcohols are prepared by heating saturated hydrocarbons within 100‹ to 225‹ C. with a gas containing oxygen and an alkyl metaborate to form a dialkyl boric acid, hydrolysing a portion of the acid to alcohol and acid, separating and recovering the alcohol, reacting the boric acid with another portion of the dialkyl boric acid to form alkyl metaborate, and reacting the latter with further saturated hydrocarbon and oxygen. Hydrocarbons may be butane, isobutane, pentane, isopentane, hexane, heptane, octane, decane, dodecane, tetradecane and pentadecane, cyclopentane, methylcyclopentane, cyclohexane, methylcyclohexane, cyclooctane, cyclodecane and cyclododecane, and a pressure sufficient to maintain the hydrocarbons in the liquid phase is preferred. A suitable apparatus is described and by-product ketone and aldehyde products may be hydrogenated to alcohol using conventional catalysts. The oxidation of dodecane and cyclohexane is described in examples. |
