PURPOSE:To obtain a carbon fiber-reinforced carbon composite material having improved mechanical characteristics and friction coefficient by impregnating a prescribed sheet with a resin, etc., laminating and forming the impregnated sheets and subjecting the formed product to baking and densifying treatment. CONSTITUTION:A strand, etc., composed of a bundle of 2,000-8,000 single fibers is cut to obtain a carbon fiber bundle (A) composed of short fibers of 0.3-100mm long. The relationship between the opening degree of the component A and the mechanical characteristics such as friction coefficient is determined beforehand. The component A is opened at an opening degree determined by using the relationship corresponding to the desired friction coefficient, etc., to obtain a sheet (B) containing fibers randomly oriented in two dimensions. The sheet B is impregnated with phenolic resin, etc., and dried. The impregnated sheets are laminated and press-formed to obtain a formed product (C). The product C is baked in an N2 atmosphere, etc., at 800-2500 deg.C, impregnated with pitch and densified by rebaking, etc., to obtain the objective carbon fiber- reinforced carbon composite material (C/C composite material). If necessary, a sliding material for brake, etc., is produced by using the C/C composite material. |
