The adapter is fixed to the machine tool spindle (12), its casing (30) prevented (94) from rotating relative to the machine frame. A cylinder (32), fastened (54,56) to the machine spindle, drives the adapter shaft (34), by transmission (68,86,88). The transmission ratio is other than unity and may be by belt (86) coupling differing diameter pulleys on adapter shaft and cylinder. The cylinder pulley (88) may have larger diameter than adapter shaft pulley (68). Bearings (38,40) on the adapter casing may be positioned on the machine spindle. The shaft is the adapter tool holder. USE/ADVANTAGE - Woodworking machinery. Enables machine tool, with its height adjustment, to use portable tooling at correct speed.
