The grinder has a vertical supply passage (5) which delivers refuse to a grinding chamber with rotary blades driven by a motor (4). Above the grinding chamber are arranged two pre-grinding blades (19) separated by a fixed angle, each having a first (20) and second (22) helical portions. The second helical portion of each pre-grinding blade is arranged above the first and forms a greater angle with the supply passage than the first helical portion. The two blades are at 180 deg. to each other, and are supported to extend upwardly from the central hub (9) of the main grinding blade unit. ADVANTAGE - Pre-grinding ensures efficient grinding of refuse material of all sizes and types.
