Propellant compsn. based on nitrocellulose with a ballistic modifier consisting of at least one Cu (II) complex of an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid with 6-12C in the chain. The Cu (II) complex is pref. a Cu (II) complex of caproic acid, caprylic acid, capric acid, lauric acid, or 2-ethylhexanoic acid. The ballistic modifier pref. consits of a mixt. of the Cu(II) complex and one or more Cu or Pb cpds. effective as a propellant modifier, esp. where the Cu or Pb cpd. is chosen from Pb stearate, Pb citrate, Pb phthalate, Pb acetophthalate, Pb salicylate, Pb beta-resorcylate, basic Cu salicylate, Cu beta-resorcylate or Cu oxide. Pref. the propellant compsn. contains 1.7-5.0 wt.% of the Cu(II) complex. The propellant compsn. pref. also contains a stabiliser, plasticiser, burning rate modifier, lubricant and/or a flammability suppressant. The compsn. may also contain at least one energy-rich component such as cyclo-1,3,5- trimethylene 2,4,6- trinitramine. Pref. the propellant compsn. has an energy of 800-1200 cal/g and a burning rate of 4-45 mm/sec. (claimed).
