The lamp includes a lamp body (10), which slidingly fits within an outer case (40) and is normally maintained by a coil spring (72) against a stop (76) in the upper case (52). The lamp-glass (16), carrying the indicating colour (17), is then separated from the exterior window-plate (38, 96) by a chamber containing liquid or gas (42), coloured to match the coachwork. When energised, together with the lamp (24), a solenoid (56), wound on a cylinder (54) in the case end (52), moves a cylindrical armature (60) surrounding the lamp-holder (26) and hence the lamp body (22,18), axially towards the window-plate (38), overcoming the spring and displacing the fluid (52) into a side cylinder (80) against a sprung (82) piston (90). External observers then see the intended lamp colour. USE/ADVANTAGE - Improves appearance by concealing inharmoniously coloured lenses within vehicle coachwork.
