PURPOSE:To prevent the reverse flow of a charge to the vertical transfer register of an image pickup element by juxtaposing a drain with the horizontal transfer register of the image pickup element. CONSTITUTION:The drain 44 is provided with the horizontal transfer register 43. That is, the charge from a photoelectric conversion element 41 of each picture element is fed to the vertical transfer register 42, transferred as shown in the arrow a2 by the register 42 and then sent to a register 43. Then the charge is transferred as shown in the arrow c2 to the register 43 and to an external device. When lots of charges are sent to the register 43 via the register 42, the charge in the register 43 overflows and the overflowed charge flows to the drain 44 juxtaposed with the register 43. Thus, the reverse flow of the charge from the register 43 to the register 42 is prevented.
