The delivery unit has a working chamber (3) the volume of which is variable by the suction and compression strokes of a driven displacement element (4). An inlet connection (6) opens into the working chamber via an inlet valve (7) and an outlet connection (9) opens from the working chambers via an outlet valve (8). An auxiliary pump (25,26) is provided which on a suction stroke of the displacement element fills the working chamber with fluid under pressure. The auxiliary pump and displacement element have a common drive (5).
