The appts. to transfer a fibre web, esp. of paper, from the press to the drying section of a papermaking machine, has a rotating smooth press surface (11) in contact with the web at the press section, such as a press roller or belt, to pass the web through a press gap (8) towards a take-off point (5) at the smooth surface displaced from the gap. The smooth press surface (11) and a suction roller (14) or chamber form a gap between them, near the take-off point (5), for the porous carrier belt (13) to pass through to bring the web to the drying section. The first group of the drying section is a row of drying cylinders (18) with a single blanket (17) for web contact with the cylinders from cylinder to cylinder. A drive (M1) is fitted at the press units (10) forming the final press gap (8). USE/ADVANTAGE - In the transfer between the press and drying sections, the free path stretch for the web is as small as possible to give a smooth run at high speeds, where the web has a relatively high longitudinal tension on entering the drying section.
