The tape drive system for use by magnetic tape recorders of the helical scan type has a base unit that slide a limited distance on a base plate. A pair of driven gear wheels (20) are built into the unit. A single motor (8) connects with the gears via a transmission. A pair of guide slots (14) are located near to the gears, along which carriers (10) are moved. Each carrier has a guide roller (12) that moves the tape against the surface of the recording drum (3). The carriers are coupled to the gear wheels by pivot mounted links (15). USE/ADVANTAGE - Simplified compact mechanism for use in camcorders. Tape tension is held constant in stop mode at lower value than in reproducing mode.
