<p>A computer file directory structure generator and retrieval tool is disclosed. The computer operates according to an operating system program (8) and an application program. The computer memory stores files in a directory structure. The tool comprises a document locator module (20), an open module (13) and a save module (12). The document locator module (20) maps the directory structure of the files stored in the memory to a real world hierarchical file structure (9) of files and directories. The mapping is independent of conventions of the operating system. The document locator module (20) creates, moves and deletes files and directories without exiting the application program. The open module (13) operates in the background of the application program and intercepts control of the processor when a command is executed to cause a file to be opened. The save module (12) operates in the background of the application program and intercepts control of the processor when a command is executed to cause the application program to request information about a file to be saved.</p> |
