Dispersion strengthened lead is produced by plastically deforming, preferably extruding, oxide-coated lead particles, such as formed by mixing lead particles, preferably not greater than 150 microns in diameter, with water, e.g. from 0.25-2% by weight while exposing to a free oxygen containing gas, e.g. air not above 100 DEG C., to break up the lead oxide coatings and distribute the resultant oxide fragments throughout the lead matrix. The oxide coating of the lead particles may constitute 1.4-30.8% (calculated as Pb2O) of the particles. The oxide coated lead particles may be deformed also by die stamping or roll compacting, producing lead finished products such as tubes, pipes, strip or sheet, or an intermediate billet which can be worked. Prior processes of strengthening lead are disclosed wherein dispersoids such as oxides of Al, Pb, Mg or Ca, or Ni are added prior to compacting.ALSO:Oxide coated lead particles for producing dispersion strengthened lead by plastic deformation are formed by mixing lead particles, preferably not greater than 150 microns in diameter with water while exposing to a free oxygen containing gas, e.g. air, so that the oxide coating of the lead particles constitutes 1.4 to 30.8% (calculated as Pb2O) of the particles. |
