A machine for making a hole in a railway rail in which a main body case (1) is clamped to a railway rail in a widthwise direction by means of a clamping means comprising a catch frame (6) and a clamping arm (7), and in which a cutter (2) is advanced perpendicularly to a rail body portion (8a) by rotating a rotating handle (16a) of a link mechanism (16) so as to make a bolt hole (13) in a predetermined position, the machine being characterized in that the position of the bolt hole (13) to be made in the rail body portion (8a) can be set by means of a height gauge (10) fixedly provided on the catch frame (6) and a pitch gauge (20) attached to the top surface of the railway rail (8).
