1,141,824. Hexachlorocyclopentadiene. VULCAN MATERIALS CO. 5 May, 1966 [15 Oct., 1965], No. 19939/66. Heading C2C. Hexachlorocyclopentadiene is prepared by reacting free chlorine with a C 5 aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon in which each carbon atom is bonded directly to not more than three other carbon atoms, or a mixture of such hydrocarbons, in a single reaction zone by feeding the chlorine and hydrocarbon into the re-. action vessel and by maintaining the reaction at between 315‹ and 455‹ C. in the presence of a particulate surface-active solid, a liquid diluent being fed into the vessel in a proportion such as to effect the desired reaction temperature. Suitable particulate surface-active solids are diatomaceous silica, graphite, silica gel, tabular alumina and glass beads. Diluents specified are carbon tetrachloride, perchloroethylene, hexachlorobutadiene and hexachlorocyclopentadiene. Octachlorocyclopentene may be formed as a by-product, and is converted to hexachlorocyclopentadiene on being recycled. |
