The invention comprises polyether ester amides which are the reaction product of a polyamide having a solution viscosity c rel of between 1.0 and 4.0 and an aromatic oxycarboxylic acid ester or a condensation product thereof, the aromatic oxycarboxylic acid ester having the formula <FORM:1108695/C3/1> in which X is a hydrogen atom or an oxyalkyl group, R is an alkyl or an alkylol group and R1 is a hydrogen atom or an alkylol, an alkylol ether or alkylol ester group. They are prepared by reacting a polyamide with an oxycarboxylic acid of the formula above, or a condensation product thereof, in the presence of re-esterification or polycondensation catalyst under vacuum at temperatures between 200 DEG and 280 DEG C. The reaction is carried out optionally with the addition of glycol terephthalate or other dicarboxylic acid glycol esters. Polyamides which may be employed include those derived from aminocarboxylic acids and their derivatives and from diamines and dicarboxylic acids. Suitable oxycarboxylic acid esters and their derivatives are methyl-p-b -hydroxyethoxybenzoate or precondensates with various quantities of a glycol terephthalate, p-hydroxy benzoic acid glycol ester or precondensates of p-hydroxybenzoic acid with a glycol and glycol esters, cyclohexane 1,4-dimethanol esters and neopentyl glycol esters of 1,2-bis-(4-carboxyphenoxy)ethane or bis(4-carboxyphenoxy)-p-xylylene. Preferred catalysts are antimony trioxide, germanium dioxide, zinc acetyl acetonate, titanium tetraisobutylate, titanium oxalate and organic tin compounds. The solution viscosities are determined in a 1% solution in m-cresol in a capillary viscometer at 25 DEG C. |
