A LiNbO3 waveguide including an Na content of 0.1 to 14.3 mol% and an Mg content of 0.8 to 10.8 mol% acts as a single mode waveguide provided that T( mu m) representing thickness of the waveguide, and lambda ( mu m) representing wavelength of the guided wave, satisfy the following equations:- in the case of TM mode, 1.9 </= (T + 0.7) lambda </= 5.7 (T >/= 0) in the case of TE mode, 0.29 </= (T + 0.04)/ lambda </= 1.19 @@@@@ (T >/= 0). The guide is formed on a LiTaO3 substrate, to which it is lattice matched, by epitaxial growth from an oxide melt containing Na and Mg. |
