Apparatus for applying tread to a tyre casing comprises rotating table 11 carrying at opposite ends hubs 12 supporting tyre casings 10, building station 13, comprising arm 14 carrying tread applying and stitching assembly 22 mounted on rotating table 34, and sensing device 54 for gauging tread thickness, the apparatus being controlled by program card 18 containing detents 37. In operation, casing 10 is locked in position Fig. 3. Sensor 54 is moved into contact with the casing, determines the correct winding radius for assembly 13 and is retracted. Button 56 is operated to start the program, whereupon table 34 slides along guides 28 so that assembly 22 contacts casing 10. The extruding device (not shown) is now started, and strip 17 is applied and stitched to the casing, rotated by motor 47, until it has been rotated through about 300 degrees when it actuates switch 49. At this point the casing is stopped and assembly 22 is moved by motor 33 across the casing to begin another stitching cycle in a position determined by program card 18. This cycle of operations is repeated after every 360 degree rotation of the casing until the tread pattern is completed, when table 11 is rotated through 180 degrees to bring a new casing into building station 13 and enable the retreaded tyre to be replaced by another casing. |
