An object is compressed isostatically by placing it in a container with at least one elastomeric or displaceable wall or bottom, filling the container with a pressure medium and sealing it, placing the container in a pressure chamber containing an hydraulic or pneumatic pressure medium and increasing the pressure in the chamber. The material which may be tungsten carbide powder with a cobalt or nickel binder may be encased in this casing of plastics material or metal foil or in a sheathing tube. In the apparatus shown for compressing a spiral heating element, the element 13 is placed in a thin-walled container 12 having a porous base 15, an elastomeric bag 16 and a support 17 fitted with porous member 18. The container is filled with a pressure medium which does not affect the element 13 and the container is sealed with a cap 14. The filled container is then immersed in a chamber 19 containing a pressure medium which does not affect the chamber and this pressure medium is pressurized by pump 20, the fluid pressure being transmitted by movement of membrane 16 to the pressure medium in the inner container thereby compressing the element 13. In an alternative embodiment, the elastomeric bag is replaced by a piston slidably mounted in a cylinder. |
