Apparatus for recording on a cinematograph film by means of an electron beam, comprises a supply reel 12, Fig. 1, mounted on a driven spindle 13, a film cleaner 18, a vacuum storage chamber 21, a pair of intermittently driven capstans 30 and 34 arranged on each side of the exit slot of the electron beam chamber 33, a further vacuum storage chamber 35, a diffused hot air film processor 46, and a take-up reel 42. Referring to Fig. 2 the end 52 of the electron beam chamber includes a flap valve 57 which may be opened to allow the beam to pass through a recording aperture 32 on to the film, which travels in a channel formed between upper and lower members 55 and 75. These members are preferably of aluminium and have their faces oxidized by a hard coating process similar to anodizing to form a hard, non-conducting smooth surface. On each side of the aperture 32 a pair of slots 66 and 67 are formed in a side plate (27, Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) bordering the channel and are connected to a vacuum pump, and a further pair of slots 64 and 65 are connected together to a second vacuum pump. Preferably the distances (a) between the aperture and the first slot, (b) between the first and second slots, and (c) between the second slots and the respective ends of the channel are such that (b) is at least equal to (a) and (c) is at least three times (a). A form projecting device 131 is adapted to hold a strip of negative film so that an image of the negative (e.g. graph lines) may be projected on to the film web by means of a flashlight 137 synchronized with the intermittent drive of the web. The capstans 30 and 34 are of the vacuum type coupled to the vacuum chambers 21 and 35 by grooves 97, and the capstan 34 may be provided with 0-rings on its film contacting surface. |
