An ultrasonic system for use in ultrasonic angioplasty comprises an ultrasonic power generator connected to a high efficiency ultrasonic transmission member formed of a material having a Q greater than about 50,000. The transmission member is inserted into a patient and ultrasonic energy is applied via the transmission member to an occlusion in the patient's circulatory system for a duration and with an intensity effective to break up the occlusion and restore good blood flow.
