PURPOSE:To carry out the dimerization of the subject compound in high selectivity and yield by using a catalyst consisting of a nickel compound, a trialkylaluminum, a trivalent phosphorus compound, a halogenated phenol, water and a sulfonic acid. CONSTITUTION:The objective dimerization reaction is carried out by using a catalyst obtained by reacting (A) a nickel compound consisting of an organic acid salt, inorganic acid salt or complex compound of nickel (e.g. nickel naphthenate or nickel fluoride) with (B) a trialkylaluminum (e.g. trimethylaluminum and tri-n-hexylaluminum), (C) a trivalent phosphorus compound of formula I to formula III (R<1> to R<3> are alkyl, aralkyl, etc.) (e.g. trimethylphosphine and trisdimethylaminophosphine), (D) a compound of formula IV (X1 to X5 are halogen, H or OH provided that at least one of X1 to X5 is halogen) (e.g. p-chlorophenol and 2,3-dichlorophenol), (E) water and (F) a sulfonic acid in the presence of an inert solvent and a small amount of a conjugated diene preferably at -50 to +30 deg.C. |
