The invention relates to a process and a device for compressing empty tin cans. The process consists in a tin can 6 which is to be compressed being first subjected, in a precompression, to a plastic deformation in its peripheral surface and thereafter, in a final compression, to a further plastic deformation into a substantially flat form in a direction perpendicular to the original longitudinal direction of the tin can 6. The device comprises a wedge-shaped track 5, along which a tin can 6 is precompressed, the one side of the track 5 being constituted by a first pressing tool 8.1,8.2 and the other side being constituted by a counterstay 5.1. The first pressing tool 8.1,8.2 has a contact surface 8.3 against the peripheral surface of the tin 6 of a width which is less than a section of the peripheral surface extending between two points situated on the diameter of the half-can from a particular end face.
