A plug for the outlet of a vessel(14) containing fused vitreous magma, partic. fused waste material, is made from a material which is non adherent to magma. The body is shaped to fit the outlet with the internal part in contact with the magma, and the external part of as size such that a free space is left between the external surface of the plug and the wall of the outlet. A series of fins extend the length of the outer surface of the plug for positioning the plug and sealing. The body of the plug is cooled. USE/ADVANTAGE - Destruction of waste material e.g. asbestos, hospital waste, industrial and treatment sludge, PCB's (polychlorinated biphenyls), dangerous gases and unpleasant odours. Semi continuous evacuation without blockages. Efficient seal.
